Desired features in Memory Cards
High Performance. Memory cards are frequently "speed rated" and Lexar Media was the first manufacturer to do this. Higher performance cards have a SUSTAINED WRITE SPEED rating.
Some memory card brands or manufacturers publicize speed ratings but these can be misleading; they show a read speed instead of a write speed, or a "burst" speed instead of a sustained speed. The differences can be noticeable in today's high resolution digital cameras. In most cases, the faster, the better.
Host Independence. Memory cards can be designed to work with any host device with memory card interface. In theory, the same card could run on a PC compatible notebook, an Apple notebook, a Pen-based PC, or a digital camera. Some devices are designed to work with only a specific format of a memory card such as an SD card or a Memory Stick.
Easy, External Insertion. Memory card are easy to install and easy to extract from the devices they work in, usually a matter of seconds.
Swapping. Some, not all memory cards can be swapped while power is on, adding to the expandability of a notebook or hand held computer. For example, some digital cameras may require that the power is OFF before swapping a card. Some desktops that have memory card readers permit the swapping of cards while power is still on. By being able to pull out one memory card and insert another, without having to reboot the system, users can save time. In addition, work groups can share cards..
