BEWARE THE AIRPORT SCAM

"The Airport Scam" takes place while you are passing through airport security.

The Scam: You place your notebook or digital camera on the conveyor belt for X-ray scanning and move into the line for the metal detector. There will be at least two people involved, the first of whom passes through with no problems. The second person is stopped and "searched" because they set off the metal detector. As this person delays your passage through to the other side, the accomplice, the first person to pass through security, takes your notebook and disappears.

Solution: When traveling through airports with your portable, ensure that it is not overly recognizable as such. Scam artists wander airports until they spot a traveler with a portable. When placing your portable on the X-ray conveyor ensure the operators recognize it is yours and that you will be picking it up on the opposite side. If delayed in line, keep a keen eye on your computer and be prepared to "make a scene" if you see a stranger pick-up your portable.
