DIGITAL CAMERAS & MEMORY...a few tips.
The most important questions is: What will I do with my digital camera?
Think hard before you answer, because your answers will help you determine the quality and perhaps brand of digital camera to purchase, and the type of digital memory card to purchase for your new digital camera.
If you only want to be able to publish pictures on the Internet, or print them at a reasonable resolution, then a 1, 2 or 3 megapixel camera may meet your needs. A low megapixel camera will also mean you may be able to use fewer or lower capacity memory cards. The number of pictures you take will also determine the size or capacity of the required digital memory cards.
But, if you want to do quality photography, start thinking about 3 + megapixel cameras. And these cameras will require more and larger capacity memory cards as the file size of each picture and be "large" and fill up a digital memory card pretty fast.
The digital camera you would like to purchase will in all probability use only one (1) type of digital memory card such as Compact Flash, Smart Media, Memory Sticks, ATA Flash or IBM Microdrives. Only a limited number of digital cameras can accept more than one type of digital memory card.
The speed of a Compact Flash card can be very important and will depend on the camera and how you use it. Larger - that is, 3 + megapixel digital cameras, use "lots" of memory, and it takes a certain amount of time to capture the picture on the camera sensor and then write or copy that image from the camera sensor to the digital memory card.
The larger the number of megapixels or if the camera resolution is not compressed, it will take several seconds for the camera to recycle to be ready to take the next picture. This is something like waiting for the external flash to recycle when you want to get the next picture and everyone is waiting for you to take it. In summary, a high speed flash card may be an excellent "upgrade" for you.
Other considerations...SD cards and Compact Flash are the most popular with high capacities, and various performance speeds are now available, Memory Sticks currently fit into Sony cameras and notebooks only.
